ADempiere is an ERP software package, which is available as open source. The meaning of the name is “to accomplish” in Italian. The license under which ADempiere is available is GNU GPL.
The origins of ADempiere can be traced back to the second half of 2006, when there was a disagreement between the corporate sponsor of the Compiere ERP and the community of developers which were working on it. The result was that the community started working on its own Compiere fork.
Just a couple of weeks later, the new software, which was called ADempiere, had become a top 5 program on Source Forge. Ever since, it’s been a top ranked project on the site. This little bit of information gives you a good idea of the number of developers that are working on it and on the importance it has for the ERP market.
The project’s main goal was creating a business solution that was open source and it was developed by the community.
ADempiere has extensive business functionality and among the business areas which are covered by it you will find ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), CRM (Customer Relationship Management), SCM (Supply Chain Management), Integrated Web Store, Integrated POS (Point of Sale), Material Requirement Planning and Financial Performance Analysis.
The structure of the project is made in such a way that all the members of the community are heard if they want to say something. The area where they discuss things is in the forums of the project. A contributor council is used to make things easier to handle and the council nominates the leader which will be the project manager.
As for the council’s role, it is to define the project’s roadmap, to accept contributions, to support the leader’s decisions, to approve the core changes, to review the specifications and to approve them and to vote when new functionalities are proposed.
At its core, ADempiere uses Java EE and the JBoss server. As for the database options available for ADempiere, they include PostgreSQL and Oracle, though MySQL is planned as well for the future.
ADempiere was created to be customized quickly when needed, for many of the potential needs that a business might have. The ADempiere Data Dictionary is the one use in Compiere, on which this software is based on.
